Acts 13:42-47: a reflection

42So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 43Now when the synagogue broke up, many of the Jews and of the devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who, speaking to them, urged them to continue in the grace of God. 44The next Sabbath, almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of God. 45But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed. 46Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, and said, “It was necessary that God’s word should be spoken to you first. Since indeed you thrust it from yourselves, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 47For so has the Lord commanded us, saying, ‘I have set you as a light for the Gentiles, that you should bring salvation to the uttermost parts of the earth.’”

When Paul's preaching in the synagogue meets jealous opposition, he makes a decisive turn, quoting God's own purpose: I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth. So Paul and Barnabas turn to the Gentiles, and the gospel begins to spread beyond Israel to all nations. God's purpose, they understood, was never for the good news to stay in one place or one people, but to go out as a light to the nations, reaching the very ends of the earth.

Notice the scope of God's purpose: a light to the Gentiles, salvation to the ends of the earth. The gospel was not meant to be kept within one nation, but to shine outward as light, reaching all peoples, to the farthest corners of the world. God's heart was always for the nations, and Paul and Barnabas, understanding this, carried the good news outward, refusing to let it stay confined.

That purpose still stands, and it shapes the mission of God's people. The gospel is a light meant to shine to the nations, salvation meant to reach the ends of the earth; it is not to be hoarded or kept confined, but carried outward. And each of us has a part in that outward-reaching purpose, whether by going, sending, praying, or shining where we are. Do not let the good news stop with you. Share God's heart for the nations, and take your part in carrying the light of the gospel outward, that salvation might reach the ends of the earth. God has made his people a light for the nations; shine, and help carry the light to those who are still in the dark.

Lord, when opposition arose, Paul turned to the Gentiles, understanding your purpose: I have made you a light for the Gentiles, to bring salvation to the ends of the earth. Thank you that your heart has always been for the nations, that the gospel is a light meant to shine to all peoples, to the farthest corners of the world. Give me a share in that outward-reaching purpose. Keep me from hoarding the good news or keeping it confined; help me carry the light of the gospel outward, whether by going, sending, praying, or shining where I am. Let me not let the good news stop with me. Give me your heart for the nations, and use me to help carry the light to those still in the dark, that salvation might reach the ends of the earth.
