Numbers 26:17-32: a reflection

17of Arod, the family of the Arodites; of Areli, the family of the Arelites. 18These are the families of the sons of Gad according to those who were counted of them, forty thousand and five hundred. 19The sons of Judah: Er and Onan. Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. 20The sons of Judah after their families were: of Shelah, the family of the Shelanites; of Perez, the family of the Perezites; of Zerah, the family of the Zerahites. 21The sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Hamul, the family of the Hamulites. 22These are the families of Judah according to those who were counted of them, seventy-six thousand five hundred. 23The sons of Issachar after their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of Puvah, the family of the Punites; 24of Jashub, the family of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the family of the Shimronites. 25These are the families of Issachar according to those who were counted of them, sixty-four thousand three hundred. 26The sons of Zebulun after their families: of Sered, the family of the Seredites; of Elon, the family of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites. 27These are the families of the Zebulunites according to those who were counted of them, sixty thousand five hundred. 28The sons of Joseph after their families: Manasseh and Ephraim. 29The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the family of the Machirites; and Machir became the father of Gilead; of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites. 30These are the sons of Gilead: of Iezer, the family of the Iezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helekites; 31and Asriel, the family of the Asrielites; and Shechem, the family of the Shechemites; 32and Shemida, the family of the Shemidaites; and Hepher, the family of the Hepherites.

This is a census, a long roll of clans and their numbers, and at first it looks like the earlier count in Numbers. But it is not the same people. Almost the entire generation that came out of Egypt has died in the wilderness, refused entry for their unbelief. This is the counting of their children, a new generation numbered on the edge of the Promised Land their parents never reached.

Notice what that means about God's purposes. The generation that failed did not cancel the promise; it only meant the promise passed to those who came after. God did not abandon his plan when one generation forfeited its share; he carried it forward into their children, counted them family by family, and prepared to bring them into the land. The roll of names is a record of a purpose that outlived a failure.

There is hope in that for anyone weighed down by the failures of the past, their own or a previous generation's. The failure of one season, even a whole generation, is not the end of what God is doing. He carries his purposes forward, often through those who come next, numbering a new generation to receive what was almost lost. God's plan is more durable than our failures. He counts the next generation, and goes on.

Lord, the failure of one generation did not cancel your promise; you carried it forward to their children. When I am weighed down by past failures, mine or others', remind me that your purposes outlast our failures, and that you go on, faithful, into what comes next.
