Leviticus 14:48-57: a reflection

48“If the priest shall come in, and examine it, and behold, the plague hasn’t spread in the house, after the house was plastered, then the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the plague is healed. 49To cleanse the house he shall take two birds, cedar wood, scarlet, and hyssop. 50He shall kill one of the birds in an earthen vessel over running water. 51He shall take the cedar wood, the hyssop, the scarlet, and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the slain bird, and in the running water, and sprinkle the house seven times. 52He shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, with the living bird, with the cedar wood, with the hyssop, and with the scarlet; 53but he shall let the living bird go out of the city into the open field. So shall he make atonement for the house; and it shall be clean.” 54This is the law for any plague of leprosy, and for an itch, 55and for the destructive mildew of a garment, and for a house, 56and for a swelling, and for a scab, and for a bright spot; 57to teach when it is unclean, and when it is clean. This is the law of leprosy.

This is an odd little ritual, easy to skip: the cleansing of a house that had been infected. The priest takes two birds. One is killed over fresh water in a clay pot. The other is dipped into the blood of the first, and then released, let go to fly away free into the open field. The house is declared clean.

Linger on those two birds, because there is a picture in them. One dies; the other lives, and it goes free only because it has been marked with the blood of the one that died. The freed bird carries the evidence of a death out into the open sky. Its freedom was bought by another's blood. Even in this small law about a moldy house, the pattern of atonement is sketched: one life given, another set free through it.

It is hard not to see Christ here, the one whose death sets others free, whose blood marks those who then fly out into life and liberty. If you have felt unclean, contaminated, in need of cleansing you cannot manage yourself, this ancient ritual quietly points ahead to the real thing. You are made clean not by your own scrubbing but by a death that frees you. Like the released bird, marked by the blood of another, you are set free to fly. Receive the cleansing, and go free.

Lord Jesus, like the released bird I am set free through the blood of another, through your death for me. Cleanse what I cannot cleanse myself, and let me fly free, marked by your blood, into the life you have won for me.
