Joshua 15:48-54: a reflection

This passage is a dry list of towns in the hill country given to the tribe of Judah, Shamir, Jattir, Socoh, and others, including Hebron and Debir. To us they are only obscure names. But behind the list lies something significant: God had promised Abraham's descendants the land, and here that promise is being fulfilled, not in vague generalities, but in specific, named places, real towns where real families would live. God's promise of land became these concrete, actual places.

Notice that God's promise was fulfilled in specific, concrete places. God had promised the land in general terms to Abraham centuries before; and here the promise takes tangible form in a list of actual towns, given to actual families. God's promises are not vague, ethereal things; they are fulfilled in the concrete realities of actual places and lives. The dry list of towns is the tangible fulfillment of a long-standing promise.

That is worth remembering about how God keeps his promises. We can think of God's promises as vague or spiritual, and forget that he fulfills them in concrete, tangible ways, in actual places, actual circumstances, actual lives. God does not deal only in generalities; he keeps his word in specific, real ways. When you hold onto a promise of God, remember that he fulfills his promises concretely, in the real details of life, not just in the abstract. The God who fulfilled his promise of land in a list of actual towns is the God who keeps his promises to you in concrete, tangible ways. Trust that his promises will take real form in the actual details of your life, as his promise of land took form in these named places.
