Daniel (Greek) 11:7-13: a reflection

7“But out of a shoot from her roots one will stand up in his place who will come to the army and will enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and will deal against them and will prevail. 8He will also carry their gods, with their molten images and their precious vessels of silver and of gold, captive into Egypt. He will refrain some years from the king of the north. 9He will come into the realm of the king of the south, but he will return into his own land. 10His sons will wage war and will assemble a multitude of great forces which will keep coming and overflow and pass through. They will return and wage war, even to his fortress. 11“The king of the south will be moved with anger and will come out and fight with him, even with the king of the north. He will send out a great multitude, and the multitude will be given into his hand. 12The multitude will be lifted up, and his heart will be exalted. He will cast down tens of thousands, but he won’t prevail. 13The king of the north will return, and will send out a multitude greater than the former. He will come on at the end of the times, even of years, with a great army and with abundant supplies.

To later readers, the details matched the actual history of the Hellenistic kingdoms with striking precision. Whatever the difficulty of the details, the passage testifies to something profound: God's detailed knowledge of the future. The rise and fall of kings and empires, the back-and-forth of their wars, was known and foretold by God before it happened.

Notice the precision of God's foreknowledge. This is not a vague prediction that things will happen, but a detailed foretelling of the specific course of history, kings, armies, campaigns, outcomes. God knew, in detail, what would unfold, long before it did. The whole complex sweep of history, with all its human choices and conflicts, was known to God in advance, foreseen and foretold.

But the God who foretold the detailed course of these kingdoms knows our future too, in all its detail. Nothing that will happen is unknown to him; he holds the future, foreseen and under his sovereign view. When the future seems uncertain and frightening, remember the God who foretold the detailed course of history. He knows what lies ahead, in all its detail, and holds it in his hands. Trust the God who knows the future in detail with your own unknown tomorrow.

Lord, this detailed prophecy of the rise and fall of kings testifies to your precise knowledge of the future; you foretold the specific course of history long before it unfolded. Steady me with that truth as I face my own uncertain future. History unfolds with all its complexity and conflict, and to me the future is unknown, unpredictable, often frightening. But you, who foretold the detailed course of these kingdoms, know my future too, in all its detail. Nothing that will happen is unknown to you; you hold the future, foreseen and under your sovereign view. When the future seems uncertain and frightening, remind me of the God who knows history in advance. You know what lies ahead, in all its detail, and hold it in your hands.
