1 Kings 8:12-16: a reflection

12Then Solomon said, “The LORD has said that he would dwell in the thick darkness. 13I have surely built you a house of habitation, a place for you to dwell in forever.” 14The king turned his face around and blessed all the assembly of Israel; and all the assembly of Israel stood. 15He said, “Blessed is the LORD, the God of Israel, who spoke with his mouth to David your father, and has with his hand fulfilled it, saying, 16‘Since the day that I brought my people Israel out of Egypt, I chose no city out of all the tribes of Israel to build a house, that my name might be there; but I chose David to be over my people Israel.’

At the dedication of the temple, Solomon blesses God, and in his blessing he marks a great truth about God's faithfulness. Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, he says, who spoke with his mouth to David my father, and has with his hand fulfilled it. God had promised David that his son would build a house for God's name; and now that house stood completed, and Solomon praises God for keeping his word: what God spoke with his mouth, he fulfilled with his hand.

Notice the completeness of God's faithfulness that Solomon celebrates: he spoke with his mouth, and fulfilled with his hand. God did not merely make a promise and leave it as words; he acted to bring it about, matching his word with his deed. The promise made to David was not forgotten or left unfulfilled; God carried it through, so that what he had said was matched by what he did. His word and his action agreed.

That is the kind of God we serve, and it grounds our confidence in his promises. God does not speak promises he fails to keep; what he says with his mouth, he fulfills with his hand. The promises he has made, to be with us, to forgive us, to keep us, to bring us home, are not idle words; the God who makes them acts to fulfill them. When you are tempted to doubt God's promises, remember Solomon's praise: God spoke, and God fulfilled. Rest on a God whose word is always matched by his deed, who does not merely say but does, who fulfills with his hand what he speaks with his mouth. His promises are as sure as his power to keep them.

Lord, at the temple's dedication, Solomon praised you as the God who spoke with your mouth to David and fulfilled it with your hand. Thank you that your faithfulness is so complete: you do not merely make promises and leave them as words, but act to bring them about, matching your word with your deed. The promise to David was not forgotten or left unfulfilled; you carried it through. Ground my confidence in that. The promises you have made, to be with me, to forgive me, to keep me, to bring me home, are not idle words; you act to fulfill them. When I am tempted to doubt your promises, remind me of Solomon's praise: you spoke, and you fulfilled. Help me rest on a God whose word is always matched by his deed, who does not merely say but does. Your promises are as sure as your power to keep them; help me trust them, and you.
