Psalms 104:1-16: a reflection

1Bless the LORD, my soul. The LORD, my God, you are very great. You are clothed with honor and majesty. 2He covers himself with light as with a garment. He stretches out the heavens like a curtain. 3He lays the beams of his rooms in the waters. He makes the clouds his chariot. He walks on the wings of the wind. 4He makes his messengers winds, and his servants flames of fire. 5He laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be moved forever. 6You covered it with the deep as with a cloak. The waters stood above the mountains. 7At your rebuke they fled. At the voice of your thunder they hurried away. 8The mountains rose, the valleys sank down, to the place which you had assigned to them. 9You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, that they don’t turn again to cover the earth. 10He sends springs into the valleys. They run among the mountains. 11They give drink to every animal of the field. The wild donkeys quench their thirst. 12The birds of the sky nest by them. They sing among the branches. 13He waters the mountains from his rooms. The earth is filled with the fruit of your works. 14He causes the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate, that he may produce food out of the earth: 15wine that makes the heart of man glad, oil to make his face to shine, and bread that strengthens man’s heart. 16The LORD’s trees are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon, which he has planted,

Psalm 104 is a great hymn to God as Maker and sustainer of all creation, clothed with light, stretching out the heavens, setting the earth on its foundations, sending springs into the valleys to water every living thing. And when it comes to God's provision for people, it names not only what we need, but what brings us joy: God brings forth bread to strengthen the heart, but also wine to gladden it, and oil to make the face shine. God provides not merely the bare necessities, but good gifts that bring gladness.

Notice the generosity in God's provision. He could have given only what is strictly needed, bread to keep us alive. But he gives more: wine to gladden the heart, oil to brighten the face, a whole world of good things that bring not only survival but joy. The God who made and sustains creation is generous, providing not just the necessary but the delightful, gifts that gladden as well as sustain.

That is worth pausing over with gratitude. We can take God's provision for granted, or think of him as one who grudgingly gives only what is necessary. But the psalm shows a generous Creator who fills the world with good things, who gives us joys as well as necessities, gladness as well as bread. Look around at the good gifts God has given, not only what you need but what brings you joy, and give thanks for a generous Maker. Receive his gifts with gratitude and gladness, and let the wine that gladdens and the bread that strengthens turn your heart in thanks to the God who gives them. He is a generous provider; enjoy his gifts, and thank him for them.

Lord, Psalm 104 praises you as Maker and sustainer of all things, and marvels that you provide not only bread to strengthen the heart, but wine to gladden it and oil to make the face shine. Thank you for your generosity. You could have given only what is strictly needed, but you give more: joys as well as necessities, a world full of good things that gladden as well as sustain. Forgive me when I take your provision for granted, or think of you as one who grudgingly gives only what is necessary. You are a generous Creator, filling the world with good things. Help me look around at the good gifts you have given, not only what I need but what brings me joy, and give thanks. Help me receive your gifts with gratitude and gladness, and let them turn my heart in thanks to you, the generous God who gives them. I bless you, my soul, for you are very great.
