Ezra 8:30-36: a reflection

30So the priests and the Levites received the weight of the silver, the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God. 31Then we departed from the river Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy and the bandits by the way. 32We came to Jerusalem, and stayed there three days. 33On the fourth day the silver and the gold and the vessels were weighed in the house of our God into the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them were Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, the Levites. 34Everything was counted and weighed; and all the weight was written at that time. 35The children of the captivity, who had come out of exile, offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, and twelve male goats for a sin offering. All this was a burnt offering to the LORD. 36They delivered the king’s commissions to the king’s local governors and to the governors beyond the River. So they supported the people and God’s house.

Ezra leads a company of exiles back to Jerusalem, carrying with them a great treasure of silver, gold, and holy vessels for the house of God. God's hand protects them on the dangerous journey, delivering them from enemies and bandits along the way. And when they arrive, notice what they do: the silver, the gold, and the vessels are carefully weighed out, item by item, into the hands of the priests, everything counted and recorded, so that all could see that what had been entrusted had been faithfully delivered.

Notice the care they took with what had been entrusted to them. This was not their own treasure but God's, given into their charge for the journey; and they handled it with scrupulous faithfulness, weighing and counting and recording every piece, so that everything was accounted for and nothing could be doubted. They were transparent and careful, trustworthy with what had been placed in their care.

That is a model for handling whatever is entrusted to us, especially what belongs to God or to others. We are often given charge of things that are not our own: money, resources, responsibilities, the trust and interests of others. And faithfulness in these things calls for the same care Ezra's company showed: scrupulous honesty, transparency, accountability, so that what was entrusted is handled rightly and can bear examination. Be trustworthy with what is placed in your care. Handle what belongs to God and to others with careful honesty and transparency, as those who will give an account, so that nothing is mishandled and your faithfulness can be seen. What is entrusted to us is a trust to be kept faithfully, as these carried God's treasure and delivered it whole.

Lord, Ezra's company carried your treasure safely to Jerusalem under your protecting hand, and when they arrived, they weighed and counted every piece, handling what had been entrusted to them with scrupulous faithfulness and transparency. Teach me that same care with whatever is entrusted to me. I am often given charge of things that are not my own: money, resources, responsibilities, the trust and interests of others. Help me handle these with careful honesty, transparency, and accountability, as those who will give an account, so that what was entrusted is handled rightly and can bear examination. Make me trustworthy with what is placed in my care, whether it belongs to you or to others. Keep me from carelessness or dishonesty with a trust, and help me deliver faithfully what has been given into my charge, as these carried your treasure and delivered it whole. Let me be found faithful.
