Luke 11:27-32: a reflection

27It came to pass, as he said these things, a certain woman out of the multitude lifted up her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which nursed you!” 28But he said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God, and keep it.” 29When the multitudes were gathering together to him, he began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks after a sign. No sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet. 30For even as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so the Son of Man will also be to this generation. 31The Queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and will condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, one greater than Solomon is here. 32The men of Nineveh will stand up in the judgment with this generation, and will condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, one greater than Jonah is here.

A woman in the crowd, moved by Jesus, calls out a blessing on his mother: blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you. It is a warm, natural thing to say. But Jesus gently redirects it: blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it. He does not dismiss his mother, who did exactly that, but he lifts the blessing from something only one woman could claim to something open to everyone.

Notice where Jesus locates true blessedness. Not in a unique proximity to him, not in biology or special access, but in hearing the word of God and keeping it. That is a blessing available to anyone, in any place, at any time. You do not have to be his mother, or an apostle, or anyone special. You have to hear his word and do it. The door to the blessing Jesus prizes is wide open.

And notice that it is both parts together: hearing and keeping. Not hearing only, which many do and then forget, but hearing that leads to doing. The blessedness is in the union of the two. So the question this passage leaves is simple and searching. Am I hearing God's word, and am I keeping it? That, Jesus says, is where real blessing lies, and it is offered to you today. Hear his word, and do it.

Lord Jesus, you call blessed those who hear the word of God and keep it, and that blessing is open to me. Help me not only to hear your word but to do it, joining the two together, and to find true blessedness where you locate it.
