Acts 15:30-35: a reflection

30So, when they were sent off, they came to Antioch. Having gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter. 31When they had read it, they rejoiced over the encouragement. 32Judas and Silas, also being prophets themselves, encouraged the brothers with many words and strengthened them. 33After they had spent some time there, they were dismissed in peace from the brothers to the apostles. 35But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

When the letter from the Jerusalem leaders reaches the church at Antioch, watch the effect: they read it, and they rejoiced at the encouragement. And then Judas and Silas, we are told, being prophets themselves, encouraged the believers with many words and strengthened them. Twice in a few verses, encouragement, and the joy and strength it brought.

Notice how much weight the passage gives to something we can treat as minor: encouragement. It does not describe dramatic miracles here, but the quieter work of building people up, saying words that lift and steady them, and it records the real effect, joy and strength in a whole community. Encouragement is not filler; it is a genuine ministry, and it does genuine good in people who need it.

We often underestimate this. A word of encouragement, honestly given, can lift someone who is discouraged, strengthen someone who is wavering, bring joy to a whole room. And it is a ministry open to every one of us; you do not need a title or a gift of miracles to encourage. You need only to notice who around you is struggling and to speak the true, lifting word. Who could you encourage today? Be like Judas and Silas: strengthen someone with your words. It matters more than you think.

Lord, help me not to underestimate the ministry of encouragement. Show me who around me is discouraged or wavering, and give me the true, lifting words to strengthen them. Make me an encourager, building others up, as Judas and Silas built up the church.
