Genesis 24:1-5: a reflection

1Abraham was old, and well advanced in age. The LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. 2Abraham said to his servant, the elder of his house, who ruled over all that he had, “Please put your hand under my thigh. 3I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you shall not take a wife for my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live. 4But you shall go to my country, and to my relatives, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” 5The servant said to him, “What if the woman isn’t willing to follow me to this land? Must I bring your son again to the land you came from?”

Abraham is old now, blessed by God in all things, and his mind is on what comes after him. He calls his trusted servant and puts him under oath: do not take a wife for my son Isaac from the Canaanites among whom we live, but go to my own people. He is thinking past his own life to the next generation, and to whether the promise will carry on through it.

Notice that Abraham's faith here is not vague; it is practical and forward-looking. He is old, he will not see how this turns out, and still he acts, arranging with care for a future he will not live to watch. Faith is not only trust for today; sometimes it looks like making wise provision for those who come after you, and entrusting the outcome to God.

And notice the servant's honest question: what if the woman will not follow me? Faith does not silence the practical what-ifs; it takes them seriously and still steps out. Abraham answers by trusting that God will go ahead of the servant. If you are worried about what you cannot control in the future, especially for those who come after you, learn from Abraham: do the wise, faithful thing you can, ask your honest questions, and leave the outcome to the God who goes ahead.

Lord, help me act in faith for a future I may not see, making wise provision for those who come after me, and trusting you to go ahead and bring about what I cannot.
