Matthew 24:9-14: a reflection
9“Then they will deliver you up to oppression and will kill you. You will be hated by all of the nations for my name’s sake. 10Then many will stumble, and will deliver up one another, and will hate one another. 11Many false prophets will arise and will lead many astray. 12Because iniquity will be multiplied, the love of many will grow cold. 13But he who endures to the end will be saved. 14This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Jesus describes hard days ahead, persecution, betrayal, false teachers, and then names a danger easy to overlook in the list of dramatic troubles: because lawlessness is multiplied, the love of many will grow cold. Notice that. Amid all the external dangers, the internal one Jesus flags is a cooling of love. In a hard, hostile, cynical climate, even the love of believers can quietly go cold.
That is a subtle and real danger. It is not always dramatic failure that undoes us in hard times; often it is a slow chilling of the heart, a love that once burned warm growing cool, cautious, guarded, worn down by disappointment and the coldness around us. When lawlessness and hostility multiply, the atmosphere itself pulls love toward cold, and we can find our own hearts hardening almost without noticing.
Against that, Jesus sets a single word: the one who endures to the end will be saved. Endurance here is not just gritting through externally; it is keeping love warm when everything around you would cool it, staying faithful and loving in a climate that discourages it. If you feel your own love growing cold, worn down, cynical, take Jesus' warning seriously and tend the fire. Guard your heart against the chill of the times. Endure in love to the end, and keep the flame burning warm when the world around you has gone cold.
Lord, in a hard and cynical world, guard my heart against the slow chilling of love that you warned of. Keep my love from growing cold, worn down by disappointment and the coldness around me. Help me endure to the end, tending the fire, faithful and warm even when the climate discourages it.
