Psalms 121:1-8: a reflection

This beloved psalm begins with a question, I lift up my eyes to the hills; where does my help come from? and answers it immediately: my help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. And then it settles into a single, repeated assurance, using one word over and over: keep. The LORD is your keeper; he who keeps you will not slumber; he will keep your soul; he will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forth and forevermore.

Notice the unsleeping vigilance in it. He who keeps you will not slumber nor sleep. Unlike a human watchman who tires and dozes, God's watch over you never lapses. There is no moment, day or night, when his attention drifts, no gap when you are unguarded because your keeper has fallen asleep. His care is constant, wakeful, unbroken.

And notice how comprehensive it is: your going out and your coming in, your whole life, all its comings and goings, covered from now and forever. That is a promise to rest on, especially at night, or in seasons of fear when you feel exposed and unprotected. You do not have to keep watch over your own life with anxious, sleepless vigilance, because God already does, and he never sleeps. The LORD is your keeper. Lie down and rest; the One who watches over you will not slumber.
