Isaiah 65:8-12: a reflection

8The LORD says, “As the new wine is found in the cluster, and one says, ‘Don’t destroy it, for a blessing is in it:’ so I will do for my servants’ sake, that I may not destroy them all. 9I will bring offspring out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains. My chosen will inherit it, and my servants will dwell there. 10Sharon will be a fold of flocks, and the valley of Achor a place for herds to lie down in, for my people who have sought me. 11“But you who forsake the LORD, who forget my holy mountain, who prepare a table for Fortune, and who fill up mixed wine to Destiny; 12I will destine you to the sword, and you will all bow down to the slaughter; because when I called, you didn’t answer. When I spoke, you didn’t listen; but you did that which was evil in my eyes, and chose that in which I didn’t delight.”

God reaches for an image from the vineyard to explain his mercy. When you find good new wine still in the cluster, someone says, do not destroy it, for there is a blessing in it. So, God says, I will do for my servants' sake, that I may not destroy them all. Even amid a people ripe for judgment, God sees the faithful few, the blessing in the cluster, and for their sake he will not destroy the whole.

Notice how the presence of the faithful stays God's hand. Do not destroy it, a blessing is in it. The good found within the mass is the reason the mass is spared. God does not overlook the faithful remnant hidden among the unfaithful; he sees them, values them, and restrains judgment for their sake. The few who have sought him become the reason mercy is extended more widely.

There is quiet significance in that for anyone who feels like a faithful minority in an unfaithful setting, a home, a workplace, a culture, wondering whether their small faithfulness matters at all. This passage suggests it matters more than you know. The blessing in the cluster, the faithful few, can be part of why God shows mercy to the whole. Your quiet faithfulness where you are is not insignificant; it may be a blessing in the cluster, one of the reasons God's patience holds. Keep being the good found within, wherever God has placed you.

Lord, you spare the whole cluster for the sake of the blessing found within it, the faithful few. Where I feel like a small faithful minority in an unfaithful place, remind me that my faithfulness is not insignificant, that it may be part of why your mercy holds. Keep me faithful, a blessing in the cluster, wherever you have placed me.
