Matthew 11:25-30: a reflection

25At that time, Jesus answered, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants. 26Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight. 27All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him. 28“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Jesus gives one of the tenderest invitations in all of Scripture: Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. To the weary and heavy-laden, those worn down by burdens and labor, Jesus offers not a heavier demand, but rest. He invites them to come to him, to take his yoke, which is easy, and his burden, which is light, and to find in him rest for their souls.

Notice to whom the invitation is addressed, and what it offers: to the weary and burdened, it offers rest. Jesus does not call the strong and self-sufficient, but the labored and heavy-laden, those worn down by their burdens; and to them he offers rest, rest for the soul. His yoke is not another crushing weight; it is easy, and his burden light. He is gentle and humble in heart, not harsh; and coming to him, taking his yoke, the weary find rest. The invitation is to bring our weariness and our burdens to him, and receive rest.

That invitation is for us, whenever we are weary and burdened. We labor under many burdens, and can grow weary, heavy-laden, worn down; and we can imagine we must simply carry on under the weight. But Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him for rest, offering a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light. When you are weary and heavy-laden, do not simply struggle on under your burdens alone; come to Christ, who invites the weary to himself and gives rest for the soul. Take his yoke, learn from him who is gentle and humble in heart, and find in him the rest he promises. Bring your weariness and your burdens to Christ, accepting his gracious invitation, come to me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest; for he offers the weary not a heavier load, but rest for the soul, a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light.
