Psalms 50:1-16: a reflection

1The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks, and calls the earth from sunrise to sunset. 2Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines out. 3Our God comes, and does not keep silent. A fire devours before him. It is very stormy around him. 4He calls to the heavens above, to the earth, that he may judge his people: 5“Gather my saints together to me, those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” 6The heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Selah. 7“Hear, my people, and I will speak. Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God. 8I don’t rebuke you for your sacrifices. Your burnt offerings are continually before me. 9I have no need for a bull from your stall, nor male goats from your pens. 10For every animal of the forest is mine, and the livestock on a thousand hills. 11I know all the birds of the mountains. The wild animals of the field are mine. 12If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. 13Will I eat the meat of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? 14Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Pay your vows to the Most High. 15Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me.” 16But to the wicked God says, “What right do you have to declare my statutes, that you have taken my covenant on your lips,

In this psalm God addresses his people about their worship, and he says something surprising: he does not need their sacrifices. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it. Every animal of the forest is his, the livestock on a thousand hills; he needs nothing from them. What he desires instead is their hearts: Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving; pay your vows to the Most High; call on me in the day of trouble, and I will deliver you. God wants not mere ritual, but thanksgiving and trust.

Notice what God says he truly desires: thanksgiving and trust, not mere ritual sacrifice. He does not need the animals they offer; everything is already his. What he desires is the offering of a grateful heart, thanksgiving; and the trust that calls on him in the day of trouble, depending on him. Mere ritual, sacrifice offered without a grateful and trusting heart, is not what God seeks; he seeks the heart itself, its gratitude and its dependence. Offer thanksgiving, and call on me in trouble: this is what God desires, not empty ritual.

That is worth taking to heart, for we can offer God the outward forms of worship without the heart he truly desires. We can go through the motions of worship, the outward acts, while our hearts are far from the gratitude and trust God seeks; but God desires not mere ritual, but thanksgiving and dependence. Do not offer God mere outward ritual, going through the motions while your heart is elsewhere; offer him the thanksgiving of a grateful heart, and the trust that calls on him in the day of trouble, which is what he truly desires. God needs nothing you can give him; what he desires is your grateful, trusting heart. Offer God thanksgiving, and call on him in trouble, giving him the grateful and dependent heart he seeks, rather than mere ritual; for God desires not the outward forms alone, but the thanksgiving and trust of the heart, as he says, offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and call on me in the day of trouble.

Lord, in this psalm you address your people about their worship, and you say something surprising: you do not need their sacrifices. Keep me from offering you mere outward ritual, going through the motions while my heart is elsewhere; help me offer you the thanksgiving of a grateful heart, and the trust that calls on you in the day of trouble. You need nothing I can give you; what you desire is my grateful, trusting heart. Help me offer you thanksgiving, Lord, and call on you in trouble, giving you the grateful and dependent heart you seek.
