Numbers 1:11-15: a reflection

This is nothing but a list of names: Abidan of Benjamin, Ahiezer of Dan, Pagiel of Asher, Eliasaph of Gad, Ahira of Naphtali. One man from each tribe, chosen to help Moses take the census. Our eyes slide right over names like these, but each was a real person, handed a real responsibility, and written down by name.

Notice that God's work here is not done by a faceless crowd. It is done through named individuals, one from each tribe, each carrying a specific share of the task. These are not the household names of Scripture; most of us have never heard of Pagiel or Ahira. And yet here they are, named and recorded, entrusted with a part in what God was doing with his people.

There is quiet dignity in that for the rest of us who are not household names either. God's work still gets done through particular people given particular jobs, most of them unremembered by history but not by him. Your part may feel small and unnoticed, one name in a long list. But God works through named people carrying their share, and he does not forget the names. Take up your part today as one entrusted with it, recorded by the God who counts his people one by one.
