Luke 9:23-27: a reflection

Jesus lays out the terms of following him plainly: if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me. Notice the word daily. The cross here is not one dramatic, once-for-all sacrifice; it is a daily thing, a dying to self that comes around again every morning, in the ordinary choices of an ordinary day.

Then he puts it as a paradox that runs against all our instincts: whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. We spend so much energy saving our lives, protecting, grasping, keeping. Jesus says that grip is exactly what loses it, and that the life given away for his sake is the life actually found. And he adds the plain arithmetic: what does it profit you to gain the whole world and lose your very self? A bad trade, however much world you gain.

This is not deprivation for its own sake; it is the way into real life. The self-denial Jesus asks is not God begrudging you happiness; it is him showing you where life actually is, on the far side of an open hand rather than a clenched one. Today, in some small daily way, take up the cross: loosen your grip on the life you are trying to save, and follow him into the life he offers.
