Nehemiah 9:16-20: a reflection

16“But they and our fathers behaved proudly, hardened their neck, didn’t listen to your commandments, 17and refused to obey. They weren’t mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and didn’t forsake them. 18Yes, when they had made themselves a molded calf, and said, ‘This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt,’ and had committed awful blasphemies, 19yet you in your manifold mercies didn’t forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of cloud didn’t depart from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither did the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way in which they should go. 20You gave also your good Spirit to instruct them, and didn’t withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.

This confession does not flatter its people. It rehearses their rebellion honestly: they acted arrogantly, stiffened their necks, refused to obey, even made a golden calf and said this is your god who brought you out of Egypt. It is an unsparing account of unfaithfulness. But watch how, at every turn, it pivots to God: but you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and you did not forsake them.

Notice what God kept doing even through their rebellion. He did not withdraw his presence, the pillar of cloud did not depart by day, nor the fire by night; he kept guiding them. He did not stop teaching them, he gave his good Spirit to instruct them. He did not cut off their supply, he did not withhold the manna, and he gave them water for their thirst. Even at their worst, at the golden calf itself, God's guidance, teaching, and provision continued. He did not forsake them.

There is deep reassurance in that about how God treats his often-unfaithful people, us included. Our rebellion is real, and this confession does not excuse it. But God's response to a wayward people is not to snatch away his presence and provision the moment we fail. He is a God ready to pardon, whose mercy and care persist even through our unfaithfulness, still guiding, still teaching, still providing. If you have failed and feared God would withdraw everything, hear this: even at the golden calf, he did not forsake them. He is slower to give up on you than you are to give up on yourself.

Lord, even when your people rebelled and made the golden calf, you did not forsake them; you kept guiding, teaching, and providing. When I have failed and feared you would withdraw your presence and care, remind me that you are a God ready to pardon, whose mercy persists through my unfaithfulness. Thank you that you are slower to give up on me than I am on myself.
