1 John 5:1-5: a reflection

1Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. Whoever loves the Father also loves the child who is born of him. 2By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep his commandments. 3For this is loving God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous. 4For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith. 5Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

John writes to believers about the power of their faith to overcome the world: Whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith. And he asks: Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? The world, with all its pressures and temptations and hostility, is overcome not by our strength or cleverness, but by faith, faith in Jesus as the Son of God. Faith is the victory that overcomes the world; the one who believes overcomes.

Notice what John names as the victory over the world: faith. He does not say we overcome the world by our own strength, our willpower, our achievements; he says the victory that overcomes the world is our faith, faith in Jesus as the Son of God. The one who believes is the one who overcomes; faith is the victory. The world's pressures and temptations and opposition are overcome not by our own power but by faith, by holding to Christ, believing him to be the Son of God. Faith in Christ is the victory that overcomes the world.

That is worth taking to heart, for our victory over the world comes through faith, not our own strength. We can try to overcome the pressures and temptations of the world by our own strength, our willpower, our efforts, and find ourselves overwhelmed; but John says the victory that overcomes the world is our faith. The way to overcome the world is not by our own power, but by faith in Christ, holding to him as the Son of God. When the world presses and tempts and opposes you, do not rely on your own strength to overcome it; the victory is faith, holding to Christ as the Son of God. Overcome the world by faith in Christ, holding to him as the Son of God, rather than relying on your own strength, as John says this is the victory that has overcome the world, your faith; for the world is overcome not by our own power but by faith, and the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God overcomes.

Take that to my heart, for my victory over the world comes through faith, not my own strength. I can try to overcome the pressures and temptations of the world by my own strength, my willpower, my efforts, and find myself overwhelmed; but John says the victory that overcomes the world is my faith. When the world presses and tempts and opposes me, keep me from relying on my own strength to overcome it; the victory is faith, holding to Christ as the Son of God. Help me overcome the world by faith in Christ, Lord, holding to him as the Son of God, rather than relying on my own strength.
