Numbers 3:11-15: a reflection

11The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 12“Behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn who open the womb among the children of Israel; and the Levites shall be mine, 13for all the firstborn are mine. On the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I made holy to me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and animal. They shall be mine. I am the LORD.” 14The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, 15“Count the children of Levi by their fathers’ houses, by their families. You shall count every male from a month old and upward.”

God tells Moses he is taking the Levites for himself, in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and he explains the claim: all the firstborn are mine; on the day I struck down the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself all the firstborn in Israel. The firstborn had been spared in the Passover, redeemed by the blood on the doorposts, and so they belonged to God. Now the Levites are taken as their substitute, set apart to be his. The refrain is simple and weighty: they shall be mine.

Notice two threads woven together. First, belonging: God claims a people as his own, mine, not vaguely but decisively. And second, redemption and substitution: the claim rests on the Passover, on lives spared by blood, and it works through one group standing in the place of another. Belonging to God is grounded in being redeemed, and it involves a substitute, one set apart in place of the many.

Both threads reach their fullness in Christ. If you belong to God, it is because you have been redeemed, not by the blood of a Passover lamb on a doorpost, but by Christ, the true Passover, who stood in your place as your substitute. And so God says over you what he said over the firstborn and the Levites: mine. There is deep security in that word. You are not your own, adrift and unclaimed; you have been redeemed and set apart, and you belong to God. Live today as one who is his, claimed, redeemed, and wholly his own.

Lord, you claim your people as your own, mine, and the claim rests on redemption, on lives spared by blood. Thank you that in Christ, the true Passover, I have been redeemed and set apart, so that you say over me, mine. Let me rest in the security of belonging wholly to you, and live today as one who is claimed, redeemed, and yours.
