Genesis 47:20-24: a reflection

20So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe on them, and the land became Pharaoh’s. 21As for the people, he moved them to the cities from one end of the border of Egypt even to the other end of it. 22Only he didn’t buy the land of the priests, for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and ate their portion which Pharaoh gave them. That is why they didn’t sell their land. 23Then Joseph said to the people, “Behold, I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh. Behold, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. 24It will happen at the harvests, that you shall give a fifth to Pharaoh, and four parts will be your own, for seed of the field, for your food, for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.”

During the years of severe famine, Joseph, given charge of Egypt, manages the crisis with wisdom and care. He gathers and distributes the grain, and as the famine deepens, he provides for the people's survival, and then, looking ahead, gives them seed to sow for the future: Behold, here is seed for you, and you shall sow the land. His stewardship did not merely address the present hunger but planned for the recovery to come, providing seed so that when the famine passed the people could rebuild. Through his wise provision and foresight, the people were carried through the hard years and given a way forward.

Notice Joseph's wise stewardship through the hard years. He did not merely react to the crisis, but managed it with foresight and care, providing for the people's survival through the famine and, looking ahead, giving them seed for the recovery to come. His stewardship carried people through the hard years, meeting the present need and planning for the future. He did not squander or mismanage, but provided wisely, sustaining the people through the crisis and giving them a way forward beyond it. The wisdom and foresight of his stewardship were what carried the people through the famine and set them up to recover.

That is worth taking to heart, for we too are called to wise stewardship and provision that carries us and others through hard times. Hard times come, seasons of scarcity and difficulty; and we can react shortsightedly, or squander and mismanage, or fail to plan; but Joseph's wise stewardship, meeting the present need and providing for the future, carried the people through the famine. There is a place for wise, foresighted stewardship that sustains us and others through hard times and plans for recovery. Do not manage hard times shortsightedly or carelessly; steward what you have wisely, providing for the present need and planning for the future, as Joseph carried the people through the famine. Practice wise stewardship and provision that carries you and others through hard times and plans for recovery, as Joseph managed the famine with foresight, providing food for the present and seed for the future; for wise stewardship sustains us through seasons of difficulty and gives a way forward beyond them, and we are called to provide with care and foresight rather than shortsightedly.
