1 Chronicles 1:34-42: a reflection

This genealogy traces the descendants of Esau and of Seir, the Edomites and the peoples who lived in that land, lines that fall outside the covenant that ran through Jacob. It would be easy to think Scripture would ignore them, focusing only on the chosen family. But here they are, recorded with care, name after name, the nations that were not the covenant people, kept in God's book alongside the chosen line.

Notice what that quietly says. God's knowledge, and his concern, are not confined to one favored family. He keeps the record of the nations too, the peoples outside the covenant, the ones the story is not mainly about. Their lines are not forgotten or beneath his notice; they are written down. From the beginning, God's view was wider than Israel alone; he is the God of all peoples, and all of them are known to him.

That wider vision runs through the whole Bible and comes to its fullness in Christ, in whom the blessing promised to Abraham reaches all the families of the earth. If you have ever felt outside the circle, not part of the main story, one of the nations rather than the chosen family, this genealogy is a small reassurance: God knows and records even those outside, because his purposes were always meant to reach them. No people, and no person, is beneath his notice or outside his knowledge. The God who kept the record of Edom knows you too.
