1 Kings 21:11-15: a reflection

11The men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who lived in his city, did as Jezebel had instructed them in the letters which she had written and sent to them. 12They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. 13The two men, the wicked fellows, came in and sat before him. The wicked fellows testified against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, “Naboth cursed God and the king!” Then they carried him out of the city and stoned him to death with stones. 14Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, “Naboth has been stoned and is dead.” 15When Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jezebel said to Ahab, “Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.”

When Ahab covets Naboth's vineyard and Naboth refuses to sell his ancestral inheritance, Jezebel arranges a murder dressed up in the forms of law and religion. She has a fast proclaimed, sets Naboth in a place of honor, and then brings false witnesses to accuse him of cursing God and the king; on this fabricated charge, Naboth is condemned and stoned, and the vineyard seized. The whole thing was a judicial murder, cloaked in a veneer of legality and piety, a fast and a trial giving a religious and legal cover to an act of theft and murder. The forms of law and religion were used to commit and conceal a grievous evil.

Notice how evil hid behind a veneer of legality and piety. Jezebel did not simply have Naboth killed; she dressed the murder in the forms of law and religion, a proclaimed fast, a public trial, sworn witnesses, so that the evil wore the appearance of legality and piety. The outward forms were observed; a fast was called, a trial held, witnesses brought; but it was all a cover for murder and theft. Evil used the forms of law and religion to accomplish and conceal itself. The veneer of legality and piety made the evil appear proper, even righteous, while it was murder. This is a peculiar horror: evil cloaked in the forms of law and religion, using their appearance to conceal its wickedness.

That is worth taking to heart, for evil can hide behind a veneer of legality and piety, and we must not be deceived by outward forms. We can be taken in by the outward forms of legality and piety, assuming that what wears their appearance must be right; but Jezebel used a fast and a trial to cloak murder, and evil can hide behind such forms. The appearance of legality or piety does not make a thing right; evil can wear those forms while remaining evil. Do not be deceived by a veneer of legality or piety into thinking something right; look past the forms to the reality, for evil can hide behind them, as Jezebel cloaked murder in a fast and a trial. Do not be deceived by a veneer of legality or piety, but look past the outward forms to the reality, remembering that evil can hide behind them, as Jezebel used a proclaimed fast and a rigged trial to cloak the murder of Naboth; for the appearance of legality or piety does not make a thing right, and evil can wear those forms while remaining wicked, so that we must not be taken in by outward appearances.
