Revelation 19:6-10: a reflection

6I heard something like the voice of a great multitude, and like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of mighty thunders, saying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns! 7Let’s rejoice and be exceedingly glad, and let’s give the glory to him. For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready.” 8It was given to her that she would array herself in bright, pure, fine linen, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. 9He said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb.’” He said to me, “These are true words of God.” 10I fell down before his feet to worship him. He said to me, “Look! Don’t do it! I am a fellow bondservant with you and with your brothers who hold the testimony of Jesus. Worship God, for the testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of Prophecy.”

John hears the roar of a vast multitude like the sound of many waters, crying, Hallelujah! For the Lord our God reigns. Let us rejoice and give him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. And then the blessing: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb. History, this vision says, is moving toward a wedding, a feast, the joyful union of Christ and his people.

Notice where it all ends. Not in a void, not in mere judgment, not in a whimper, but in a celebration, a marriage supper, the deepest joy human life knows, love consummated in a feast. The whole long, often painful story of God and his people is heading toward this: the Lamb and his bride, joined at last, and a great multitude rejoicing that the Lord reigns. And you are invited: blessed are those called to the supper.

That is a hope worth holding when the present feels heavy and the story seems to be going nowhere good. The end of the story is a wedding feast. Whatever you are walking through now, if you belong to Christ, you are invited to that supper, moving toward a joy that will make the whole hard journey worth it. And the angel's reminder frames it rightly: worship God, and no one else. Set your hope on the marriage supper of the Lamb, keep your worship for God alone, and let the coming feast lighten the present road.

Lord, history is moving toward a wedding feast, the marriage supper of the Lamb, the joyful union of Christ and his people. When the present feels heavy and the story seems to go nowhere good, remind me that the end is a celebration, and that I am invited. Set my hope on that coming feast, keep my worship for you alone, and let it lighten the road I walk now.
