Zephaniah 1:14-18: a reflection

14The great day of the LORD is near. It is near and hurries greatly, the voice of the day of the LORD. The mighty man cries there bitterly. 15That day is a day of wrath, a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness, 16a day of the trumpet and alarm against the fortified cities and against the high battlements. 17I will bring such distress on men that they will walk like blind men because they have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung. 18Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

As the prophet Zephaniah warns of the coming day of the Lord's reckoning, he names a sobering truth about what will and will not be able to save people in that day. Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD's wrath. The wealth people trust in, that seems to secure them, that they gather and rely on, will be powerless to deliver them when they stand before God's reckoning. Silver and gold cannot buy safety in that day; the riches that seem so solid will prove unable to save. What people trust in for security, their wealth, will fail them at the reckoning; it cannot deliver from the judgment of God. The riches we rely on for safety are powerless where it matters most, before God; they cannot save us in the day of his reckoning.

Notice what will not deliver in that day: silver and gold, the wealth people trust. People gather wealth and rely on it for security, as though it could keep them safe; but the prophet declares it will not deliver them in the day of the Lord's reckoning. The riches that seem so solid, so able to secure us, prove powerless where it matters most, before the judgment of God. What we trust in for safety, if it is our wealth, will fail us at the last; silver and gold cannot buy deliverance from God's reckoning. This exposes the folly of trusting in riches for our ultimate security; they cannot save us before God. The wealth that seems to secure us in this life is powerless in the day that matters most. To rely on riches for our deepest safety is to lean on what cannot deliver. Only God, not gold, can save us in his day.

That is worth taking to heart, for wealth cannot deliver us in the day of God's reckoning; only God can save. We can trust in our wealth for security, gathering and relying on it as though it could keep us safe; but the prophet warns that silver and gold will not deliver in the day of the Lord's reckoning. The riches we rely on prove powerless where it matters most, before God. To trust in wealth for our ultimate safety is to lean on what cannot save. Do not trust in your wealth for your deepest security; it cannot deliver you in the day of God's reckoning, when only God can save. Do not rely on wealth for your ultimate security, remembering that silver and gold cannot deliver you in the day of God's reckoning, as the prophet warned that neither silver nor gold will be able to deliver in the day of the LORD's wrath; for the riches we trust in for safety prove powerless where it matters most, before God, and to lean on wealth for our deepest deliverance is folly, since only God, not gold, can save us in the day of his reckoning.
