Proverbs 11:1-16: a reflection

1A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but accurate weights are his delight. 2When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom. 3The integrity of the upright shall guide them, but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them. 4Riches don’t profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. 5The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way, but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness. 6The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them, but the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires. 7When a wicked man dies, hope perishes, and expectation of power comes to nothing. 8A righteous person is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked takes his place. 9With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, but the righteous will be delivered through knowledge. 10When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices. When the wicked perish, there is shouting. 11By the blessing of the upright, the city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked. 12One who despises his neighbor is void of wisdom, but a man of understanding holds his peace. 13One who brings gossip betrays a confidence, but one who is of a trustworthy spirit is one who keeps a secret. 14Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory. 15He who is collateral for a stranger will suffer for it, but he who refuses pledges of collateral is secure. 16A gracious woman obtains honor, but violent men obtain riches.

Among these proverbs is a plain word about honesty in our dealings, which reaches even to the smallest details of weights and measures. A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, it says, but accurate weights are his delight. In the marketplace of the ancient world, a merchant could cheat by using dishonest weights, giving less than what was paid for; and God declares such dishonesty an abomination, while honest, accurate weights are his delight. This tells us that God cares about honesty in the ordinary details of our dealings, not only in large matters but in the small, everyday honesty of fair measures, accurate accounts, truthful dealings. Integrity in the small details of how we deal with others is a delight to God; dishonesty in them, even in weights and measures, is an abomination. God delights in honest dealing, down to the smallest measure. Honesty in the ordinary details of our dealings matters to God. God cares about integrity in the small, everyday honesty of how we deal with others.

Notice what God attaches his delight and his displeasure to: honest and dishonest weights. This is not a large, dramatic matter of good and evil, but the everyday honesty of fair measures in the marketplace. And yet God declares a false balance an abomination, and accurate weights his delight. This tells us that God's concern for honesty and integrity reaches to the ordinary, small details of our dealings, not only to the large and obvious. He cares how we weigh and measure, how we account, how we deal with others in the small everyday transactions of life. Integrity is not only for the big moments but for the small, ordinary honesty of fair dealing. To use honest weights, to deal fairly and truthfully in the small details, is a delight to God; to cheat, even in weights and measures, is an abomination to him. This calls us to honesty and integrity in the ordinary details of our dealings, the everyday fairness that God notices and delights in. God's eye is on the small honesty of our dealings, not only the large. Integrity in little things is a delight to God. Honest dealing in the ordinary details matters to him.

That is worth taking to heart, for God delights in honesty in the ordinary details of our dealings, and cares about integrity even in small measures. We can be careful about honesty in large matters while cheating or cutting corners in the small, ordinary details of our dealings, thinking they do not matter; but God declares a false balance an abomination and accurate weights his delight. Integrity in the small everyday honesty of our dealings is a delight to God. Do not be dishonest in the small details of your dealings, thinking they do not matter; God delights in honest weights and measures, in integrity down to the smallest detail. Practice honesty and integrity in the ordinary details of your dealings, the everyday fairness of accurate weights and truthful accounts, since God delights in honest dealing down to the smallest measure and abhors a false balance, as the proverb says accurate weights are his delight; for God's concern for integrity reaches not only to the large and obvious matters but to the small, ordinary honesty of how we deal with others in everyday transactions, so that to deal fairly and truthfully in the small details is a delight to God, and honesty in little things matters to him as much as in great, being the everyday integrity that his eye is upon and in which he delights.

Take that to my heart, for you delight in honesty in the ordinary details of my dealings, and care about integrity even in small measures. I can be careful about honesty in large matters while cutting corners in the small details, thinking they do not matter; but you declare a false balance an abomination and accurate weights your delight. Keep me from being dishonest in the small details of my dealings, thinking they do not matter; help me practice honesty and integrity in the ordinary details, Lord, the everyday fairness of accurate weights and truthful accounts, since you delight in honest dealing down to the smallest measure.
