Zephaniah 2:1-15: a reflection

1Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together, you nation that has no shame, 2before the appointed time when the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD comes on you, before the day of the LORD’s anger comes on you. 3Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, who have kept his ordinances. Seek righteousness. Seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD’s anger. 4For Gaza will be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation. They will drive out Ashdod at noonday, and Ekron will be rooted up. 5Woe to the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! The LORD’s word is against you, Canaan, the land of the Philistines. I will destroy you until there is no inhabitant. 6The sea coast will be pastures, with cottages for shepherds and folds for flocks. 7The coast will be for the remnant of the house of Judah. They will find pasture. In the houses of Ashkelon, they will lie down in the evening, for the LORD, their God, will visit them and restore them. 8I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults of the children of Ammon, with which they have reproached my people and magnified themselves against their border. 9Therefore, as I live, says the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, surely Moab will be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, a possession of nettles and salt pits, and a perpetual desolation. The remnant of my people will plunder them, and the survivors of my nation will inherit them. 10This they will have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of Armies. 11The LORD will be awesome to them, for he will famish all the gods of the land. Men will worship him, everyone from his place, even all the shores of the nations. 12You Cushites also, you will be killed by my sword. 13He will stretch out his hand against the north, destroy Assyria, and will make Nineveh a desolation, as dry as the wilderness. 14Herds will lie down in the middle of her, all kinds of animals. Both the pelican and the porcupine will lodge in its capitals. Their calls will echo through the windows. Desolation will be in the thresholds, for he has laid bare the cedar beams. 15This is the joyous city that lived carelessly, that said in her heart, “I am, and there is no one besides me.” How she has become a desolation, a place for animals to lie down in! Everyone who passes by her will hiss and shake their fists.

In the midst of announcing judgment on the nations, Zephaniah issues a tender call to those who would seek refuge: seek the LORD, seek righteousness, seek humility. Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land, he says; seek righteousness, seek humility. It may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD's anger. Amid the coming judgment, the way of safety is to seek the LORD, and specifically to seek righteousness and humility. The call is not to self-assertion or pride but to humbly seeking God and his righteousness. Those who seek the LORD in humility may be hidden, sheltered, in the day of trouble. The way of refuge is to seek the LORD, righteousness, and humility. Seek the LORD in humility, and you may be hidden. To seek God and humility is the way of shelter. The humble who seek the LORD find refuge.

Notice what the prophet calls people to seek: the LORD, and righteousness, and humility. Not power, not self-assertion, not the pride that magnifies itself, but humility and righteousness, sought before the LORD. And this seeking is the way of refuge: it may be that you will be hidden in the day of the LORD's anger. The humble who seek God and his righteousness find shelter, while the proud, who magnify themselves, face judgment. This teaches us where true refuge lies: not in asserting ourselves, not in pride or self-sufficiency, but in humbly seeking the LORD and his righteousness. In a world that prizes self-assertion and looks down on humility, the prophet calls us to seek humility as the way of shelter under God. To seek the LORD in humility, to seek righteousness rather than to magnify ourselves, is the way of refuge. Humility that seeks God finds shelter; pride that magnifies itself faces judgment. Seek the LORD and humility, and find refuge. The way of safety is humble seeking of God, not proud self-assertion.

That is worth taking to heart, for the way of refuge is to seek the LORD in humility, seeking righteousness rather than magnifying ourselves. We can look for security in self-assertion, in pride, in magnifying ourselves; but Zephaniah calls the humble to seek the LORD, seek righteousness, seek humility, and says it may be they will be hidden in the day of trouble. Humble seeking of God is the way of shelter. Do not look for refuge in pride and self-assertion; seek the LORD, seek righteousness, seek humility, and find shelter under God. Seek the LORD in humility, seeking righteousness rather than magnifying yourself, for this is the way of refuge, as Zephaniah, amid announcing judgment on proud nations that magnified themselves, called the humble of the land to seek the LORD, seek righteousness, seek humility, that it may be they would be hidden in the day of the LORD's anger; for we can look for security in self-assertion and pride, in magnifying ourselves, but true refuge lies not in asserting ourselves but in humbly seeking God and his righteousness, so that the humble who seek the LORD find shelter while the proud who magnify themselves face judgment, and we do well to seek God and humility as the way of safety rather than proud self-assertion.

Take that to my heart, for the way of refuge is to seek you in humility, seeking righteousness rather than magnifying myself. Keep me from looking for refuge in pride and self-assertion; help me seek you, Lord, seek righteousness, seek humility, and find shelter under you, humbly seeking you as the way of safety rather than proud self-assertion.
