Numbers 29:17-22: a reflection

17“‘On the second day you shall offer twelve young bulls, two rams, and fourteen male lambs a year old without defect; 18and their meal offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, according to their number, after the ordinance; 19and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering, with its meal offering and their drink offerings. 20“‘On the third day: eleven bulls, two rams, fourteen male lambs a year old without defect; 21and their meal offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams, and for the lambs, according to their number, after the ordinance; 22and one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the continual burnt offering, and its meal offering, and its drink offering.

These verses list the offerings for the days of a festival, so many bulls, rams, and lambs each day. But a phrase recurs that is easy to skip and worth catching: each day's special offerings are made in addition to the continual burnt offering. Underneath all the extra festival sacrifices, the regular, daily burnt offering kept going. The special did not replace the steady; it was added on top of it.

Notice the pattern. There were high days, feasts with abundant, special offerings, peaks of worship. And there was the continual offering, the steady, ordinary, daily sacrifice that went on every single day, feast or no feast. The festivals rose out of a foundation of daily, continual devotion; the peaks rested on the steady baseline underneath.

There is a lesson here about the shape of a life with God. We tend to prize the peaks, the high days, the special seasons of intense worship or spiritual experience, and there is a place for them. But they are meant to rest on a foundation of continual, ordinary, daily devotion, the steady offering that goes on whether or not it is a feast day. A faith made only of peaks, with no continual offering underneath, has no foundation. Tend the daily, continual devotion, the ordinary prayer and faithfulness of unremarkable days, and let the special seasons rise from that steady baseline. The continual offering holds up the feast.

Lord, beneath all the special festival offerings, the continual daily offering kept going, the steady foundation under the peaks. Keep me from a faith made only of high days and special seasons, with no continual devotion underneath. Help me tend the daily, ordinary faithfulness, the steady offering of unremarkable days, so that whatever peaks come rest on a solid foundation of continual love for you.
