Nehemiah 7:31-35: a reflection

This is part of a long census of those who returned from exile to rebuild, town by town, number by number: the men of Michmash, one hundred twenty-two; the men of Bethel and Ai, one hundred twenty-three; the men of Nebo, fifty-two. Small numbers from small towns, carefully recorded. It reads as dry accounting, and yet there is something quietly moving in it: each returning group was counted, named, and written down, even the town that could muster only fifty-two.

Notice the care in the counting. God's returned people were not a faceless mass; they were numbered by their towns, each community recorded, none too small to be counted. The fifty-two from Nebo mattered enough to be written into the record alongside the larger groups. The God who was rebuilding his people through this return knew them not as a crowd but by their communities, each one counted and kept.

There is reassurance in that for anyone who feels lost in the crowd, part of a group too small to matter. The God who had these returning families counted town by town, down to the fifty-two, is a God who numbers his people carefully, who does not overlook the small or lose track of the few. You are not an anonymous face in a mass to him. The God who counted the men of Nebo knows you, your name, your small corner, your place among his people. You are counted and kept.
