Genesis 8:18-22: a reflection

18Noah went out, with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives with him. 19Every animal, every creeping thing, and every bird, whatever moves on the earth, after their families, went out of the ship. 20Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal, and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. 21The LORD smelled the pleasant aroma. The LORD said in his heart, “I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake because the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth. I will never again strike every living thing, as I have done. 22While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night will not cease.”

After the flood, God makes a promise about the faithful continuance of the world's order: while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will not cease. While the earth remains, God says in his heart, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night will not cease. After the great upheaval of the flood, God promises a settled, faithful ordering of the world: the seasons will come in their turn, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter; day will follow night in unbroken rhythm. This regular, reliable order of the world is upheld by God's own promise, a faithfulness we can rely on. This shows God's faithful upholding of the order of the world. God faithfully upholds the order of the world, season by season, day by day. The reliable rhythm of the world rests on God's promise. You can rely on God's faithful sustaining of creation. The turning of the seasons is a sign of God's steady faithfulness.

Notice the promise God makes about the world's order. After the flood, God commits himself to a faithful, continuing order for the world: as long as the earth remains, the seasons will not cease, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, will follow one another in reliable rhythm. This is not a chaotic, unpredictable world, at the mercy of chance, but an ordered one, whose steady rhythms rest on God's own promise and faithful upholding. This holds a quiet but real comfort. The regular order of the world, the turning of the seasons, the rising and setting of the sun, the coming of seedtime and harvest, is not a meaningless mechanism or a lucky stability that might fail at any moment; it is upheld by God's own promise and faithfulness. Every sunrise, every turning season, every harvest that follows sowing, is, in a sense, a sign of God's steady faithfulness, his keeping of this promise. We can rely on the faithful ordering of the world because we can rely on the God who upholds it and promised it. And this faithfulness in the order of creation points to a God who is faithful in all his ways, on whom we can rely. We do well to receive the reliable order of the world as a sign of God's faithfulness, and to trust the God who faithfully upholds it. Receive the reliable order of the world as a sign of God's faithfulness. The turning seasons and daily rhythms rest on God's own promise. You can rely on God's steady, faithful upholding of creation. Let the world's faithful order remind you of the faithful God who upholds it.

That is worth resting in, for God faithfully upholds the order of the world by his own promise, and we can rely on his faithfulness, as he promised that seedtime and harvest would not cease. We can take the world's order for granted, or fear it is fragile; but God promised that the seasons and rhythms of the world would not cease while the earth remains. God upholds it. When you see the seasons turn and the sun rise, receive it as a sign of God's steady faithfulness, and trust the God who faithfully upholds the order of the world. Receive the reliable order of the world, the turning seasons and daily rhythms, as a sign of God's steady faithfulness, and rely on the God who upholds it by his own promise, as after the flood God made a promise about the faithful continuance of the world's order, that while the earth remains seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night will not cease; for after the great upheaval of the flood God promised a settled, faithful ordering of the world, the seasons coming in their turn and day following night in unbroken rhythm, this regular, reliable order upheld by God's own promise, a faithfulness we can rely on, which holds a quiet but real comfort, since the regular order of the world, the turning of the seasons and the rising and setting of the sun and the coming of seedtime and harvest, is not a meaningless mechanism or a lucky stability that might fail at any moment but is upheld by God's own promise and faithfulness, so that every sunrise and turning season and harvest that follows sowing is in a sense a sign of God's steady faithfulness and his keeping of this promise, and we can rely on the faithful ordering of the world because we can rely on the God who upholds and promised it, this faithfulness in creation pointing to a God who is faithful in all his ways, so that we do well to receive the reliable order of the world as a sign of God's faithfulness and to trust him.

Lord, after the flood, you make a promise about the faithful continuance of the world's order: while the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will not cease. While the earth remains, you say in your heart, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night will not cease. After the great upheaval of the flood, you promise a settled, faithful ordering of the world: the seasons will come in their turn, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter; day will follow night in unbroken rhythm. This regular, reliable order of the world is upheld by your own promise, a faithfulness I can rely on. Show me the promise you make about the world's order. After the flood, you commit yourself to a faithful, continuing order for the world: as long as the earth remains, the seasons will not cease, and day and night will follow one another in reliable rhythm. This is not a chaotic, unpredictable world, at the mercy of chance, but an ordered one, whose steady rhythms rest on your own promise and faithful upholding. This holds a quiet but real comfort. The regular order of the world, the turning of the seasons, the rising and setting of the sun, the coming of seedtime and harvest, is not a meaningless mechanism or a lucky stability that might fail at any moment; it is upheld by your own promise and faithfulness. Every sunrise, every turning season, every harvest that follows sowing, is, in a sense, a sign of your steady faithfulness, your keeping of this promise. I can rely on the faithful ordering of the world because I can rely on you, who uphold it and promised it. And this faithfulness in creation points to a God who is faithful in all his ways. Take that to my heart. When I see the seasons turn and the sun rise, help me receive it, Lord, as a sign of your steady faithfulness, and trust you, who faithfully uphold the order of the world by your own promise, and who are faithful in all your ways, so that I may rely on you.
