Numbers 34:13-29: a reflection

13Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, “This is the land which you shall inherit by lot, which the LORD has commanded to give to the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe; 14for the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their fathers’ houses, the tribe of the children of Gad according to their fathers’ houses, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance. 15The two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sunrise.” 16The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 17“These are the names of the men who shall divide the land to you for inheritance: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun. 18You shall take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for inheritance. 19These are the names of the men: Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 20Of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud. 21Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon. 22Of the tribe of the children of Dan a prince, Bukki the son of Jogli. 23Of the children of Joseph: of the tribe of the children of Manasseh a prince, Hanniel the son of Ephod. 24Of the tribe of the children of Ephraim a prince, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan. 25Of the tribe of the children of Zebulun a prince, Elizaphan the son of Parnach. 26Of the tribe of the children of Issachar a prince, Paltiel the son of Azzan. 27Of the tribe of the children of Asher a prince, Ahihud the son of Shelomi. 28Of the tribe of the children of Naphtali a prince, Pedahel the son of Ammihud.” 29These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance to the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.

As the land is to be divided among the tribes, God appoints a leader from every tribe to oversee the distribution, so that each tribe would be represented and fairly provided for. You shall take one prince of every tribe to divide the land for inheritance, God says, and then names them, one from each tribe. God did not leave the dividing of the inheritance to chance, favoritism, or the strong taking the best for themselves. He appointed a representative from every tribe to oversee the distribution, so that each tribe would have a voice in the process and each would receive its fair share. God's care was that all his people be fairly provided for, none left out or overlooked. This shows God's care that each of his people be fairly provided for, none left out. God cares that each of his people be fairly provided for, none overlooked. God does not leave the provision of his people to chance or favoritism. Each of God's people is represented and cared for in his provision. God's care reaches to the fair provision of all his own.

Notice the care in how the land was to be divided. The inheritance was to be distributed among all the tribes; and God did not leave this to chance, to the strong grabbing the best, or to favoritism toward some tribes over others. He appointed a leader from every single tribe to take part in overseeing the division, so that each tribe was represented, each had a voice in the process, and each would receive its fair inheritance. No tribe was left out, unrepresented, or at the mercy of others; God saw to it that all were fairly provided for. This reflects something about God's care for his people. God's care is not only for some, the prominent, the strong, the favored; it reaches to all his people, that each be fairly provided for, none overlooked or left out. God does not provide for his people by chance or favoritism, leaving some to be neglected while others are favored; his care sees to it that each has their place and portion. This is a comfort: that in God's provision, we are not overlooked or left to the mercy of the strong; God cares that each of his people be fairly provided for, each represented, each given their share. We do well to trust God's fair and caring provision for all his people, knowing that none is overlooked or left out. Trust God's care that each of his people be fairly provided for, none overlooked. God does not provide by chance or favoritism, leaving some neglected. You are not overlooked in God's provision; he cares for each of his own. God sees to it that all his people have their place and portion.

That is worth resting in, for God cares that each of his people be fairly provided for, none overlooked, as he appointed a leader from every tribe to divide the inheritance. We can fear being overlooked, left to the mercy of the strong; but God saw to it that every tribe was represented and fairly provided for in dividing the land. You are cared for. When you fear being overlooked in God's provision, remember that he cares for each of his people, that none is left out, but each is fairly provided for. Trust God's fair and caring provision for all his people, that each is represented and none overlooked, as when the land was to be divided among the tribes God appointed a leader from every tribe to oversee the distribution so that each tribe would be represented and fairly provided for, taking one prince of every tribe to divide the land; for God did not leave the dividing of the inheritance to chance, favoritism, or the strong taking the best for themselves, but appointed a representative from every tribe so that each would have a voice and each would receive its fair share, God's care being that all his people be fairly provided for and none left out or overlooked, which reflects something about his care for his people, that his care is not only for some, the prominent and strong and favored, but reaches to all his people that each be fairly provided for and none overlooked, since God does not provide by chance or favoritism leaving some neglected while others are favored but sees to it that each has their place and portion, which is a comfort, that in God's provision we are not overlooked or left to the mercy of the strong but God cares that each of his people be fairly provided for and given their share, so that we do well to trust God's fair and caring provision for all his people.

When I fear being overlooked in your provision, help me remember, Lord, that you care for each of your people, that none is left out, but each is fairly provided for and given their share, and help me trust your fair and caring provision for all your own, knowing I am not overlooked by you.
