1 Chronicles 4:24-38: a reflection

24The sons of Simeon: Nemuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, Shaul; 25Shallum his son, Mibsam his son, and Mishma his son. 26The sons of Mishma: Hammuel his son, Zaccur his son, Shimei his son. 27Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters; but his brothers didn’t have many children, and all their family didn’t multiply like the children of Judah. 28They lived at Beersheba, Moladah, Hazarshual, 29at Bilhah, at Ezem, at Tolad, 30at Bethuel, at Hormah, at Ziklag, 31at Beth Marcaboth, Hazar Susim, at Beth Biri, and at Shaaraim. These were their cities until David’s reign. 32Their villages were Etam, Ain, Rimmon, Tochen, and Ashan, five cities; 33and all their villages that were around the same cities, as far as Baal. These were their settlements, and they kept their genealogy. 34Meshobab, Jamlech, Joshah the son of Amaziah, 35Joel, Jehu the son of Joshibiah, the son of Seraiah, the son of Asiel, 36Elioenai, Jaakobah, Jeshohaiah, Asaiah, Adiel, Jesimiel, Benaiah, 37and Ziza the son of Shiphi, the son of Allon, the son of Jedaiah, the son of Shimri, the son of Shemaiah— 38these mentioned by name were princes in their families. Their fathers’ houses increased greatly.

This passage is a list of names, the sons of Simeon and the towns they lived in, ending with clan leaders whose families grew. To modern eyes it can read like a page to skip. But Scripture took care to record these people, their settlements, their genealogies, the ordinary spread of a family across a stretch of land. God keeps track of names we would forget.

Simeon was not a large or prominent tribe. The text even notes that they did not multiply like Judah. Yet each name is set down, remembered, given a place in the sacred record. The Lord does not measure worth by prominence. The small tribe, the lesser-known clan, the families whose only claim is that they lived and belonged, all find their names written and kept.

There is quiet comfort in this for anyone who feels unremarkable, uncounted, lost in the crowd of more prominent lives. The God who preserved the names of Simeon's clans knows your name too, and the ordinary shape of your days is not beneath his notice. You do not need to be famous to be remembered by him. Live faithfully in your own small place, sure that you are known and kept.

Lord, you recorded the names of a small tribe so that they would not be forgotten, and you know my name as well. When I feel uncounted or overlooked, remind me that the ordinary shape of my life is not beneath your notice. Help me to live faithfully in my own place, content to be known and kept by you. Amen.
