Numbers 29:7-11: a reflection

7“‘On the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall afflict your souls. You shall do no kind of work; 8but you shall offer a burnt offering to the LORD for a pleasant aroma: one young bull, one ram, seven male lambs a year old, all without defect; 9and their meal offering, fine flour mixed with oil: three tenths for the bull, two tenths for the one ram, 10one tenth for every lamb of the seven lambs; 11one male goat for a sin offering, in addition to the sin offering of atonement, and the continual burnt offering, and its meal offering, and their drink offerings.

On the tenth day of the seventh month, the people were to hold a holy assembly, to afflict their souls, and to do no work. This was the Day of Atonement, the most solemn day of the year, set apart for humbling the heart before God. The offerings are listed carefully, a bull, a ram, lambs, a goat for a sin offering, everything ordered so that the people could be reconciled to God.

Two things stand together here: rest from work and affliction of soul. On this day Israel did not earn anything. They laid down their labor and humbled themselves, receiving atonement as a gift arranged by God's own instruction. The elaborate sacrifices were not a way of buying God's favor but a way of taking sin seriously while trusting the remedy he provided.

All of this points beyond itself to Christ, who is both the sin offering and the great high priest, the atonement these rituals could only foreshadow. You no longer bring bulls and goats, but the posture the day calls for still fits: lay down your striving, humble your heart, and receive the forgiveness God has provided at his own cost. Make room today to stop, to be honest about your sin, and to rest in the atonement won for you.

Lord, on the day of atonement your people laid down their work and humbled their hearts to receive the forgiveness you provided. Teach me that same posture. Let me stop striving to earn what you give freely, be honest about my sin, and rest in the atonement Christ has won at his own cost. Thank you for the remedy you yourself supplied. Amen.
