Ezekiel 34:17-24: a reflection

17“As for you, O my flock, the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, the rams and the male goats. 18Does it seem a small thing to you to have fed on the good pasture, but you must tread down with your feet the residue of your pasture? And to have drunk of the clear waters, but must you foul the residue with your feet? 19As for my sheep, they eat that which you have trodden with your feet, and they drink that which you have fouled with your feet.’ 20“Therefore the Lord GOD says to them: ‘Behold, I, even I, will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21Because you thrust with side and with shoulder, and push all the diseased with your horns, until you have scattered them abroad, 22therefore I will save my flock, and they will no more be a prey. I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23I will set up one shepherd over them, and he will feed them, even my servant David. He will feed them, and he will be their shepherd. 24I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David prince among them. I, the LORD, have spoken it.

God turns from the failed shepherds to the flock itself, and what he sees is not innocent. The strong sheep have fed on the good pasture and then trampled the rest; they have drunk the clear water and fouled what remained for others. The weak are left with what the strong have ruined. God notices, and he declares that he will judge between the fat sheep and the lean.

This is a word about how the strong treat the weak. The Lord takes the side of the pushed-aside, the ones shoved with shoulder and horn until they are scattered. He promises to save his flock so that they are no longer prey, and to set over them one shepherd, his servant David, a promise that reaches forward to Christ, the good shepherd who gathers and protects the weak.

Hear this as both warning and comfort. If you are among the strong, take care how you use your advantage; God sees when the capable trample what others need. And if you are among the lean, worn down and shoved aside, know that God has appointed himself your defender and given you a shepherd in Christ. Let this shape how you treat those with less strength, and let it steady you if you are the one being pushed.

Lord, you see how the strong can trample what the weak depend on, and you take the side of the pushed-aside. Where I am strong, guard me from using my advantage to another's harm. Where I am worn and shoved aside, be my defender. Thank you for Christ, the good shepherd, who gathers and protects your flock. Make me gentle with the weak. Amen.
