1 Kings 8:17-21: a reflection

17“Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. 18But the LORD said to David my father, ‘Whereas it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well that it was in your heart. 19Nevertheless, you shall not build the house; but your son who shall come out of your body, he shall build the house for my name.’ 20The LORD has established his word that he spoke; for I have risen up in the place of David my father, and I sit on the throne of Israel, as the LORD promised, and have built the house for the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. 21There I have set a place for the ark, in which is the LORD’s covenant, which he made with our fathers when he brought them out of the land of Egypt.”

Solomon, standing before the assembled people at the temple's dedication, recalls something tender about his father. It was in David's heart to build a house for the name of the Lord. But God told David that he would not be the one to build it; his son would. And notice how God framed the refusal: you did well that it was in your heart. The desire itself was honored, even though the doing was given to another.

There is grace in that word. David poured his longing and much of his preparation into a project he would never see completed. God did not treat that longing as wasted or second-best. He affirmed it, you did well, while assigning the actual construction to Solomon. The father dreamed and gathered; the son built. And Solomon, standing in the finished temple, gives his father the honor of having wanted it well.

You may carry desires for good things you will not personally complete, work you begin that others will finish, dreams you pour yourself into that come to fruition only after you are gone. Take heart from God's word to David. He honors the heart that longs to do good for him, even when the completion falls to someone else. Do your part faithfully, hold your role loosely, and trust that God values your desire and your preparation as much as another's finishing.

Lord, you honored David's desire to build for you even though the work fell to his son, saying he did well that it was in his heart. When I long to do good that I may never complete, receive that longing as you received his. Help me to do my part faithfully and to hand on gladly what others will finish, trusting that you value the heart that desires to serve you. Amen.
