2 Chronicles 34:8-13: a reflection

8Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder to repair the house of the LORD his God. 9They came to Hilkiah the high priest and delivered the money that was brought into God’s house, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had gathered from the hands of Manasseh, Ephraim, of all the remnant of Israel, of all Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10They delivered it into the hands of the workmen who had the oversight of the LORD’s house; and the workmen who labored in the LORD’s house gave it to mend and repair the house. 11They gave it to the carpenters and to the builders to buy cut stone and timber for couplings, and to make beams for the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed. 12The men did the work faithfully. Their overseers were Jahath and Obadiah the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to give direction; and others of the Levites, who were all skillful with musical instruments. 13Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and directed all who did the work in every kind of service. Of the Levites, there were scribes, officials, and gatekeepers.

Young King Josiah, having begun to purge the land of idolatry, turns to repairing the neglected house of God. He sends trusted officials to gather the collected funds and hand them over to the workers, the carpenters and builders who will buy timber and cut stone to mend what earlier kings had let fall into ruin. It is careful, organized, practical work, the unglamorous labor of restoration.

A small phrase in the account deserves attention: the men did the work faithfully. Overseers were appointed, skilled Levites gave direction, and everyone from the craftsmen to those who carried burdens did their part with integrity. There was no grand miracle here, just honest people doing honest work well, restoring God's house stone by stone. Scripture pauses to honor their faithfulness, as though the quality of their ordinary labor mattered to God.

Most of the work God calls us to is like this, not dramatic but faithful: doing our tasks with integrity, mending what has fallen into disrepair, carrying our share of the burden. The phrase the men did the work faithfully is a good ambition for any life. Whatever labor is in front of you today, ordinary as it may seem, do it faithfully, as unto God. He notices and honors work done with integrity, even when no one else does.

Lord, the workers who repaired your house did their work faithfully, and you saw fit to record it. Make that my ambition too. Whatever ordinary labor is before me, help me to do it with integrity, as unto you, mending what is broken and carrying my share of the burden. Let faithfulness mark my work, even when no one but you is watching. Amen.
