This passage is a roll call of the returning exiles, counted by their towns: the people of Bethlehem, Anathoth, Bethel and Ai, and many more, each community numbered as they came home. To the casual reader it is a dry list. But behind each name is a real family, uprooted by exile, now making the long journey back to rebuild their lives in the places their ancestors had known. God kept count of every one.

What moves in this list is the theme of homecoming, town by town. These were not just numbers to God but people he was gathering back to their inheritance, restoring after the long displacement of exile. The care to record where each group belonged, this town, that village, reflects a God who does not deal with his people as an anonymous mass but knows their homes and their histories. The scattered were being gathered, name by name and place by place.

If you have ever felt scattered, displaced, far from where you belong, this quiet list speaks hope. The God who gathered the exiles back to their own towns, counting each family with care, is a God who brings his people home. He knows your name and your place. Whatever exile you have known, trust the God who specializes in restoration, who gathers the scattered and settles them again, and who will not lose track of a single one who belongs to him.

Lord, you gathered your exiled people home town by town, counting each family with care, knowing every name and place. When I feel scattered or far from where I belong, remind me that you are a God who brings your people home. You know my name and my place, and you will not lose track of me. Gather and settle me, and let me trust your restoring hand. Amen.
