Psalms 1:1-6: a reflection

1Blessed is the man who doesn’t walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand on the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers; 2but his delight is in the LORD’s law. On his law he meditates day and night. 3He will be like a tree planted by the streams of water, that produces its fruit in its season, whose leaf also does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper. 4The wicked are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. 5Therefore the wicked shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 6For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish.

The whole book of Psalms opens with a portrait of the blessed life, and it begins with what such a person avoids: he does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, stand in the way of sinners, or sit among scoffers. Notice the slow drift the verbs describe, from walking, to standing, to sitting, from passing influence to settled company. The blessed person refuses that downward path and instead delights in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.

The result is a beautiful image: he is like a tree planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in season, its leaf never withering. Roots that reach steadily to the water yield a life that stays green even in drought and fruitful in its time. The wicked, by contrast, are like chaff that the wind drives away, weightless and rootless, with nothing to hold them when judgment comes. Two ways, two destinies, set starkly side by side.

The psalm asks where you are sinking your roots. A life shaped by the steady intake of God's word, delighted in and pondered day and night, becomes like that well-watered tree, resilient and fruitful. A life shaped instead by the drifting counsel of those who scoff at God has nothing lasting to hold it. Plant yourself by the stream. Let God's word be your daily delight, and trust that a life rooted there will bear fruit in its season and endure.

Lord, you set two ways before me, and I want to be like the tree planted by your streams, rooted in your word and fruitful in its season. Keep me from the slow drift into the company of those who scoff at you. Make your word my daily delight, something I ponder day and night, so that my life stays green and bears fruit that lasts. Amen.
