2 Kings 19:14-19: a reflection

14Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to the LORD’s house, and spread it before the LORD. 15Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, “LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 16Incline your ear, LORD, and hear. Open your eyes, LORD, and see. Hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to defy the living God. 17Truly, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, 18and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them. 19Now therefore, LORD our God, save us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, LORD, are God alone.”

A threatening letter arrives from the Assyrian king, full of intimidation and mockery of Israel's God. Hezekiah's response is a model of faith under pressure. He does not fire back a defiant reply or collapse in panic; he takes the letter up to the house of the Lord and spreads it out before God. He lays the very threat, in all its detail, open before the One who can actually do something about it.

Then he prays, and his prayer is worth studying. He begins not with his crisis but with who God is: Lord, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth; you made heaven and earth. He acknowledges that the Assyrians really have destroyed other nations and their idols, because those were no gods at all. And his final plea is not merely for rescue but for God's glory: save us, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone are God.

When a threat looms over you, Hezekiah shows you what to do with it: spread it before the Lord. Do not rehearse it endlessly in your mind or answer it only in your own strength. Take it, in all its specifics, and lay it open before God in prayer, beginning with who he is and ending with a desire for his glory. The God who is enthroned above all the kingdoms of the earth invites you to bring your fears straight to him.

Lord, God enthroned over all the kingdoms of the earth, teach me to do as Hezekiah did and spread my threats before you. When fear looms, keep me from rehearsing it endlessly or facing it only in my own strength. Let me lay it open before you, remembering who you are, and let even my rescue serve your glory, that others may know you alone are God. Amen.
