1 John 2:24-29: a reflection

24Therefore, as for you, let that remain in you which you heard from the beginning. If that which you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son, and in the Father. 25This is the promise which he promised us, the eternal life. 26These things I have written to you concerning those who would lead you astray. 27As for you, the anointing which you received from him remains in you, and you don’t need for anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is no lie, and even as it taught you, you will remain in him. 28Now, little children, remain in him, that when he appears, we may have boldness and not be ashamed before him at his coming. 29If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

John writes to believers being unsettled by those who would lead them astray, and his counsel is steadying: let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If the truth you first received abides in you, he says, then you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. The safeguard against being led away is not chasing after every new teaching but holding fast to the sure word you were given at the start.

He reminds them of a gift they already have: the anointing they received from God, his Spirit, who abides in them and teaches them what is true. This does not mean they need no teachers at all, but that they are not helpless before deceivers; the Spirit within them confirms the truth and guards them from the lie. And so John's repeated word is simply, abide in him, remain in him, stay where you already are, rooted in Christ.

The call to abide is a call to steady faithfulness. In a world full of voices pulling you in new directions, the wisest thing is often not to move but to remain, holding onto the truth you received and the Spirit who lives in you. John gives a reason that reaches to the end: abide in him, so that when he appears, you may have confidence and not shrink back in shame. Stay rooted in Christ now, and you will be ready and unafraid to meet him when he comes.

Lord Jesus, in a world of voices pulling me every direction, teach me simply to abide in you, holding fast to the truth I received and to your Spirit who lives in me. Keep me from being led astray, and root me deeper in you. So live in me now that when you appear, I may meet you with confidence and not shame. Keep me remaining in you. Amen.
