John 1:40-45: a reflection

40One of the two who heard John and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41He first found his own brother, Simon, and said to him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is, being interpreted, Christ). 42He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas” (which is by interpretation, Peter). 43On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.” 44Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael, and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the law and also the prophets, wrote: Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”

The gospel begins to spread in the simplest way imaginable: one person telling another. Andrew, having found Jesus, first goes to his own brother Simon and says, we have found the Messiah, and brings him to Jesus. The next day Philip is called, and Philip immediately goes to Nathanael with the same good news. No grand campaign, no strategy, just a series of personal invitations, each new follower reaching for someone he knows.

Notice how natural and relational it is. Andrew goes to his brother; Philip goes to his friend. They do not wait until they have everything figured out; they simply share what they have found and bring people to Jesus. And when Nathanael raises a doubt, Philip does not argue; he says, come and see. The best answer to hesitation is often an invitation to meet Jesus for oneself, not a perfect argument.

You are part of this same chain. Someone told you, and now you can tell someone else, not with pressure or polish, but with the simple honesty of Andrew and Philip: we have found him, come and see. Think of the person nearest you, a brother, a friend, a neighbor, and consider how you might bring them to Jesus. The gospel has traveled two thousand years mostly like this, one ordinary person inviting another. Take your place in the chain.

Lord Jesus, the good news reached me because someone was willing to tell me, and now I can tell someone else. Give me the simple boldness of Andrew and Philip, who brought their brother and their friend to you. Bring to mind the person nearest me who needs you, and help me to say, without pressure, come and see. Let me take my place in the chain of witness. Amen.
