Exodus 39:27-31: a reflection

27They made the tunics of fine linen of woven work for Aaron and for his sons, 28the turban of fine linen, the linen headbands of fine linen, the linen trousers of fine twined linen, 29the sash of fine twined linen, blue, purple, and scarlet, the work of the embroiderer, as the LORD commanded Moses. 30They made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote on it an inscription, like the engravings of a signet: “HOLY TO THE LORD”. 31They tied to it a lace of blue, to fasten it on the turban above, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Among the garments made for the high priest was a plate of pure gold worn on the front of his turban, and engraved on it were the words: HOLY TO THE LORD. The priest carried that inscription on his forehead as he served, a visible declaration of what he was: set apart, belonging wholly to God, consecrated for his service. Everyone who saw him saw the words: Holy to the LORD.

Notice what the inscription declared. To be holy to the LORD is to be set apart, marked as belonging to God, dedicated to him. The high priest wore that identity openly, on his forehead, as the defining truth about him. He was not his own; he was the Lord's, consecrated, and everything he did flowed from that belonging. The gold plate was a constant, visible reminder of whose he was.

And that identity, once carried by one priest, now belongs to all who are Christ's. Believers are called a holy priesthood, set apart, belonging to God, marked as his own, not with a gold plate on the forehead but by the Spirit within. You are holy to the LORD, consecrated, not your own but his. Let that be the defining truth you carry through your day, as the priest carried it on his brow: I belong to God; I am set apart for him. Live as one on whom is written, Holy to the LORD.

Lord, the high priest wore on his forehead the words Holy to the LORD, a visible sign that he was set apart and belonged wholly to you. Thank you that in Christ I too am made holy to you, consecrated, not my own but yours. Let that be the truth I carry through my day, that I belong to you and am set apart for you. Help me live as one on whom is written, Holy to the LORD.
