Romans 8:26-30: a reflection

26In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. 27He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the saints according to God. 28We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30Whom he predestined, those he also called. Whom he called, those he also justified. Whom he justified, those he also glorified.

Paul offers comfort for the times when we do not even know how to pray. In our weakness, he says, the Spirit himself helps us, interceding for us with groanings too deep for words. When you are so burdened or confused that you cannot form a prayer, the Spirit within you is carrying your wordless longings to God, and the Father, who searches hearts, understands perfectly. You are never praying alone.

Then comes one of the most trusted promises in Scripture: we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Not that all things are good, but that God weaves everything, even the hard and painful, into good for his people. And Paul grounds this in an unbreakable chain of God's purpose: those he foreknew he predestined, called, justified, and glorified, from eternity past to glory to come. What God begins in you, he will surely complete.

Hold onto both gifts here. When words fail you, the Spirit prays; you do not have to get your prayers right for them to reach God. And when life is hard, you can trust that God is working even this into good, according to a purpose that stretches from before you were born to a glory already secured. Nothing can finally derail what God has begun in those he loves. Rest in the Spirit's help and the Father's unbreakable purpose.

Lord, when I cannot find words, thank you that your Spirit prays within me with groanings too deep for speech, and you understand. And when life is hard, help me to trust that you are weaving everything into good, according to a purpose no power can break. What you have begun in me, you will complete. Let me rest in your Spirit's help and your unfailing purpose. Amen.
