John 7:33-39: a reflection

33Then Jesus said, “I will be with you a little while longer, then I go to him who sent me. 34You will seek me and won’t find me. You can’t come where I am.” 35The Jews therefore said among themselves, “Where will this man go that we won’t find him? Will he go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36What is this word that he said, ‘You will seek me, and won’t find me;’ and ‘Where I am, you can’t come’?” 37Now on the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink! 38He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, from within him will flow rivers of living water.” 39But he said this about the Spirit, which those believing in him were to receive. For the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus wasn’t yet glorified.

On the last and greatest day of the feast, when the crowds were gathered and the ceremonies were at their height, Jesus stands and cries out an open invitation: if anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. He does not offer a technique or a teaching but himself, as the one who satisfies the deepest thirst of the human heart. Whoever comes to him, he promises, will find that rivers of living water flow from within.

John tells us what Jesus meant: he was speaking of the Spirit, whom those who believed in him would receive. The picture is generous beyond measure. Christ does not merely give a sip to quench a momentary thirst; he puts within the believer a spring, rivers of living water, the Spirit himself, welling up and overflowing to others. What begins as coming to drink becomes a source of life flowing outward. The thirsty one becomes a channel of refreshment.

Whatever your soul is truly thirsty for, satisfaction, meaning, peace, life, Jesus says the answer is to come to him and drink. Not to earn, not to strive, but to come, thirsty as you are, and receive. And what he gives is not a small comfort but his Spirit within you, a living stream that can refresh others through you. Come to him today with your thirst, drink deeply, and let his living water flow out to a thirsty world.

Lord Jesus, you stood and cried out to the thirsty to come to you and drink, and you promised rivers of living water within. I come to you with my thirst, not to earn but simply to receive. Fill me with your Spirit, the living water only you can give, and let that stream flow out through me to refresh others. Satisfy my soul, and make me a channel of your life. Amen.
