Daniel (Greek) 8:14-18: a reflection

14He said to me, “To two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings. Then the sanctuary will be cleansed.” 15When I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, I sought to understand it. Then behold, there stood before me something like the appearance of a man. 16I heard a man’s voice between the banks of the Ulai, which called, and said, “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.” 17So he came near where I stood; and when he came, I was frightened, and fell on my face; but he said to me, “Understand, son of man; for the vision belongs to the time of the end.” 18Now as he was speaking with me, I fell into a deep sleep with my face toward the ground; but he touched me, and set me upright.

Daniel receives a vision so weighty that he seeks to understand it, and God sends the angel Gabriel to explain. But the encounter overwhelms him. When Gabriel draws near, Daniel is frightened and falls on his face; as the angel speaks, Daniel sinks into a deep, senseless sleep, face to the ground. The revelation of God's purposes for the end is more than the prophet's frame can bear. He is undone by what he is being shown.

What happens next is tender. The angel touches him and sets him upright, steadying him so that he can receive the message. God does not leave Daniel collapsed and terrified; he provides the very strength needed to stand and understand. The One who gives the overwhelming vision also gives the touch that raises the trembling prophet to his feet. Revelation and gentleness come together in the same moment.

There are times when the greatness of God, or the weight of what he shows us about the world and its end, is more than we can bear on our own strength. Daniel's experience assures you that God does not abandon you in that overwhelmed place. He draws near, steadies you, and lifts you up so that you can receive what he wants to give. When the truth feels too heavy to stand under, wait for the touch that sets you upright, and trust the God who both reveals and strengthens.

Lord, like Daniel I am sometimes overwhelmed by your greatness and by the weight of what you show me. Thank you that you do not leave me collapsed in fear but draw near, steady me, and set me on my feet. When the truth feels too heavy to bear, give me the touch that raises me up, and strengthen me to receive what you want me to know. Amen.
