Galatians 4:1-7: a reflection

1But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is lord of all, 2but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father. 3So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world. 4But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law, 5that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as children. 6And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!” 7So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Paul paints a picture of the difference Christ makes. Before, he says, we were like heirs who were still children, no better off than servants, held under guardians and rules. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law so that we might receive adoption as children. The whole movement is from servitude to sonship, from being under rules to being welcomed into the family.

And the proof of that new relationship is deeply personal. Because you are now children, Paul says, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself gives you the confidence to call God your Father, in the intimate language a child uses. You are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. Everything the Father has is now part of your inheritance.

Let the weight of this settle on you. If you belong to Christ, your standing before God is not that of a servant nervously trying to earn approval, but that of a beloved child, free to call him Abba, Father, and destined to inherit. When you feel like a servant scrambling to please a distant master, hear the Spirit's cry within you and remember who you are. You are an adopted child of God and an heir. Live from that identity, not from fear.

Lord, you sent your Son to redeem me and your Spirit to make me your child, so that I can cry, Abba, Father. When I fall back into the fear of a servant trying to earn approval, remind me who I am, your beloved child and heir through Christ. Let me live from that adoption, in freedom and confidence, resting in the love of the Father who welcomed me home. Amen.
