Ezekiel 11:1-6: a reflection

1Moreover the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the LORD’s house, which looks eastward. Behold, twenty-five men were at the door of the gate; and I saw among them Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, princes of the people. 2He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise iniquity, and who give wicked counsel in this city; 3who say, ‘The time is not near to build houses. This is the cauldron, and we are the meat.’ 4Therefore prophesy against them. Prophesy, son of man.” 5The LORD’s Spirit fell on me, and he said to me, “Speak, ‘The LORD says: “Thus you have said, house of Israel; for I know the things that come into your mind. 6You have multiplied your slain in this city, and you have filled its streets with the slain.”

The Spirit shows Ezekiel a group of leaders at the city gate who are giving wicked counsel. They have a false confidence, saying in effect, this city is a secure pot and we are the meat safe inside it, imagining themselves protected no matter what they do. God sees through their scheming and tells Ezekiel, I know the things that come into your mind. Their private plans and self-assured words are not hidden from him.

God's charge against them is grave: they had filled the city with violence and were leading it toward ruin, all while telling themselves they were safe. Their false security was built on ignoring both their own wrongdoing and the God who sees it. The pot they trusted to protect them would not hold. Bad counsel, offered with confidence and clothed in reassurance, was steering the whole city toward disaster.

Two warnings for you here. First, God knows the thoughts of the mind; no scheme or private rationalization is hidden from him, so live before the God who sees. Second, beware the false security that says you are safe no matter how you live, and beware confident voices that reassure you while leading you astray. Do not build your sense of safety on ignoring your own sin. Real security is found not in a comfortable self-assurance but in walking honestly before the God who sees all.

Lord, you see the thoughts of my mind, and no private scheme or rationalization is hidden from you. Guard me from false security that tells me I am safe no matter how I live, and from confident voices that reassure me while leading me astray. Help me to walk honestly before you, finding my true safety not in self-assurance but in you who see all. Amen.
