Daniel (Greek) 14:13-17: a reflection

13They weren’t concerned, for under the table they had made a secret entrance, by which they entered in continually, and consumed those things. 14It happened, when they had gone out, the king set the food before Bel. Now Daniel had commanded his servants to bring ashes, and they scattered them all over the temple in the presence of the king alone. Then they went out, shut the door, sealed it with the king’s signet, and so departed. 15Now in the night, the priests came with their wives and children, as they usually did, and ate and drank it all. 16In the morning, the king arose, and Daniel with him. 17The king said, “Daniel, are the seals whole?” He said, “Yes, O king, they are whole.”

This story comes from the Greek additions to Daniel and tells of a clever exposure of fraud. The king believed the idol Bel was truly consuming the food offered to it each night, when in fact the priests were secretly eating it themselves through a hidden entrance. Daniel, unconvinced, quietly has ashes spread across the temple floor after the offerings are set out, then the doors are sealed with the king's own signet. The trap is set to reveal the truth.

In the morning the seals are found unbroken, but the ashes tell the story: the floor is covered with the footprints of the priests and their families who had crept in during the night. What had looked like the miraculous power of a god was nothing but human deception. The idol had never eaten anything; it was a hollow fraud propped up by those who profited from it. Daniel's simple test brought the truth into the light.

The account is a lesson in the emptiness of false gods and the value of testing what claims our devotion. Idols, ancient or modern, often depend on people not looking too closely, on illusions maintained by those who benefit. God is not afraid of honest examination; the truth serves him. Do not give your trust and worship to what cannot bear scrutiny. Test the things that claim your heart, as Daniel tested Bel, and give your devotion only to the God who is real.

Lord, Daniel exposed a hollow idol with a handful of ashes, showing it had no life at all. Guard me from giving my trust to false gods that cannot bear honest examination. Help me to test what claims my devotion and to see through illusions, so that I give my worship only to you, the God who is truly living and real. Amen.
