Wisdom 19:17-22: a reflection

17And moreover they were stricken with loss of sight (even as were those others at the righteous man’s doors), when, being surrounded with yawning darkness, they each looked for the passage through his own door. 18For as the notes of a lute vary the character of the rhythm, even so the elements, changing their order one with another, continuing always in its sound, as may clearly be conjectured from the sight of the things that have happened. 19For creatures of the dry land were turned into creatures of the waters, and creatures that swim moved upon the land. 20Fire kept the mastery of its own power in water, and water forgot its quenching nature. 21On the contrary, flames didn’t consume flesh of perishable creatures that walked among them, neither did they melt the crystalline grains of ambrosial food that were melted easily. 22For in all things, O Lord, you magnified your people, and you glorified them and didn’t lightly regard them, standing by their side in every time and place.

This passage reflects on the wonders of the Exodus, seeing in them a striking truth: that God reordered creation itself for the sake of his people. The writer marvels at how the elements seemed to change places, land creatures and water creatures exchanging their natures, fire not consuming what it should, all bent to serve God's purpose of delivering Israel. Creation, in his telling, is like an instrument God can retune, adjusting the ordinary order of things for the good of those he loves.

The passage reaches its climax in a line of deep comfort: in all things, O Lord, you magnified your people, and you did not lightly regard them, standing by their side in every time and place. That is the heart of it. The wonders were not random displays but expressions of God's constant, attentive presence with his people. He stood by their side, the writer says, in every time and place, never distant, never indifferent, always near to help.

Whether or not you ever see creation reordered on your behalf, the truth underneath these wonders is meant for you: God stands by his people in every time and place. He does not lightly regard those who are his; he is present and attentive, near to help in ways seen and unseen. When you feel alone or forgotten, hold onto this ancient confidence. The God who bent creation itself for his people is standing by your side, in this time and this place, and he will not lightly regard you.

Lord, you bent creation itself to deliver your people, and you stood by their side in every time and place. Thank you that the same attentive presence is with me. When I feel alone or forgotten, remind me that you do not lightly regard those who are yours. Stand by my side in this time and place, near to help, and let me rest in your constant care. Amen.
